Fictionary Terms of Use
What Fictionary is
Fictionary translates between English and constructed languages from science fiction and fantasy, and includes a set of ciphers for fun. It is a hobbyist reference and a toy, not a scholarly authority and not a professional translation service.
How good the translations are, honestly
Results come in two kinds and the app always labels which one you are looking at. Read the label, because the difference is large.
- Real constructed languages give a rough, largely word-by-word rendering built from published dictionaries. Grammar, idiom and register are frequently wrong. Every such result carries a quality note, and that note is not decoration.
- Ciphers are letter games, labelled just for fun. They are not languages and translate nothing.
We do not invent vocabulary. Where a word has no sourced, verified dictionary entry, Fictionary says so rather than guessing, and entries still awaiting curation are never shown. That means gaps are common, which is the honest outcome.
Do not rely on Fictionary for a tattoo, an engraving, a legal or official document, or anything else where being wrong is expensive or permanent. Ask a human expert in that language community.
We are not affiliated with the rights holders
The constructed languages Fictionary covers appear in books, films, television and games owned by their respective rights holders. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of them. Fictionary refers to each language descriptively, by name, to say what it is. All trademarks belong to their owners.
Language data and licences
Language data comes from published community sources under their own licences, which we follow. Some of that data is licensed on terms incompatible with distribution inside an app store binary, so those languages are present on the web version and deliberately absent from the installed app. That is a licence obligation, not a missing feature.

What you type and what you save is yours, and it stays on your device. See the Privacy Policy for the two optional features that send anything to our server.
Acceptable use
Please do not use Fictionary to harass anyone, to break the law, or to attack, overload or reverse engineer the service.
No warranty, and limits on liability
Fictionary is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the app or from reliance on any translation, transliteration or pronunciation it produces.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, and some places do not allow the exclusions above, so they may not apply to you.
Changes
We may update these terms. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised terms.
