Fictionary Privacy Policy
The short version
Fictionary has no accounts and no tracking. Translation happens on your own device, so most of the time nothing you type leaves it at all. Your saved phrases and settings are stored on the device and we cannot see them.
There is no account
There is no sign up, no sign in and no password. We never ask for your name, your email address or your age. We hold no profile for you, because there is nothing to hold one against.
Translation happens on your device
The dictionaries ship inside the app. When you translate a word or a phrase, that work is done locally and the text is not sent anywhere.
When something does leave your device
There are two features that talk to our server, and only while you use them.
- Spoken audio. If you ask Fictionary to speak a phrase using a voice that is generated on our server rather than by your own device, the text of that phrase is sent to us and passed to our speech provider, which returns audio. To avoid regenerating the same audio repeatedly, we keep the returned audio in a cache identified by the phrase and voice settings. That cache holds the phrase text and the audio. It holds no name, no account and no device identifier, because we have none.
- Story content. Fetching curated stories asks our server for that content. The request carries no information about you.
If you would rather nothing left the device at all, use your device's own voice for speech and skip the curated stories.
What we do not do
- No analytics, no tracking and no advertising, anywhere in the app.
- No advertising identifiers and no behavioural profile.
- No location.
- No selling or sharing of anything for advertising, because there is nothing to sell.
Saved phrases and settings
Your saved phrases, favourites and preferences live in the app's own storage on your device. They are not uploaded and there is no server copy, so deleting the app removes them and they cannot be restored or moved to another device.
Children
Fictionary is made to be comfortable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included. There is no account to create, no personal detail requested, and no third-party tracking, so a child using the app discloses nothing to us.
Who we share with
Only the speech provider that generates server voices, and only the phrase you asked to have spoken. Nothing else, and nobody else, except where the law requires it.
